How to Prevent Electrical Fires

Electrical Fires and How to Deal with One

Having a home or apartment comes with great responsibility. The owners or tenants assume the luxury of having a place to call their own; however, they also assume the risks associated with modern day dwellings. Homes today have furnaces, hot water heaters, hair straighteners, and several electrical outlets. It is my goal to help you mitigate these risks!

In this post, we will look at how to prevent electrical fires . We will also prepare for the worst and learn how to minimize the damage if we unfortunately encounter an electrical fire. Electrical fires are very dangerous, as the fire can “brew” in the walls before the inhabitants have any idea of what is going on. With this in mind, the necessary precautions are must be taken.

As I have said in other posts, the best defense is a good offense. Taking the following actions may be lifesaving.

Be aware and responsible for the potential electrical fire dangers in your home. Note and rectify hot outlets, flickering lights, burnt outlets, or fuses that frequently blow. All of these occurrences suggest an unsafe environment. If you are unsure if something is safe or not, ask your landlord or a licensed electrician.

DO NOT overload electrical outlets or extension cords. That RA who told you that extension cords weren’t allowed in your dorm room as they increase the risk of fire may have been right. Just because a plug may fit in an electrical outlet, does not mean that it is safe. I even take the extra step of unplugging appliances when not using them.

Electrical fires have many causes, such as fray or faulty wiring, faulty appliances, and overloaded outlets. Keep this in mind when plugging in your accessories. If you are unsure of your home or apartments wiring, consult with a licensed electrician and make the necessary adjustments—they could be lifesaving. GET A MONITORED HEAT DETECTOR. Electrical fires sometimes “brew” in your walls, producing hardly any smoke until the fire is extremely large and out of control. A heat detector will provide an early detection. Whenever consulting a customer, I highlight the importance of a heat detectors—it could be lifesaving.

In case a fire does break out … NEVER use water on an electrical fire . This could possibly cause electrocution! It will also not put the fire out. This is a lose, lose situation.

Use an ABC fire extinguisher. Never use just an A fire extinguisher on an electrical fire. Please contact ATP Alarms for a commercial grade fire extinguisher today if you do not already have one.

***As always, remember objects and material things can be replaced. Do not risk your life to save one of these objects. Leave it to the fire department as they are professionals. In addition, if you live in a secluded area, it is always a great idea to check in with your local fire department regularly to confirm that they know how to get to your home.

Stay safe!

Customer service matters. When choosing a service provider for your home or business, it is important to understand the providers’ customer service capabilities. Does the company have a support team? Do they have an on-call technician if there is an emergency? Does the company make paying the bill easy? How hard is it to schedule service? We all want to support local and small companies. However, it is important that your local business can service your account in an efficient manner.
